The Research Office provides comprehensive support and strategic services for Athabasca University faculty and student researchers. We partner with researchers to design and deliver compelling research programs for high impact research.
Services for faculty and staff
Athabasca University offers faculty opportunities for research and innovation across all disciplines. The Research Office can help you:
- plan for digital research infrastructure needs
- develop knowledge mobilization plans
- explore, prepare, and submit external grant applications
- prospect and develop partnerships with industry and community groups
- navigate intellectual property and commercialization opportunities
- manage your research grant funds
- navigate research ethics and compliance processes
- promote and disseminate your research
The Research Office oversees and supports the administrative functions related to all of the above service offerings and supports for Athabasca University researchers.
Services for students
Athabasca University recognizes inquiry-based and creative learning and places a high priority on providing research opportunities for students. These include:
- internal grants and awards
- help with applying for external awards
- research assistant positions funded through research grants and awards
Additional supports for graduate research funding and opportunities are available through the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
Services for all researchers
The Research Office facilitates the ethics certification process for research projects involving humans and animals. Researchers can consult with the research ethics officer to help move their application smoothly through the review process.
Support for research data management plans and deposit are available in partnership with the Athabasca University Library. Current resources are available in the AU Library Guide to Research Data Management, and consultation and planning services are available by appointment with the research data management librarian.
Athabasca University researchers can access networks and resources through memberships sponsored by the Research Office including The Conversation Canada, Research Impact Canada, and Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion.

Research software
Athabasca University supports the development and delivery of digital-first research using cloud software and storage through IDEA Lab. Researchers can contact IDEA Lab to learn more about current and upcoming opportunities for funding and research development using cloud technologies.
Researchers can independently access discounted rates on various software packages (e.g., NVIVO and SPSS).
