Join the Faculty of Health Disciplines team

We offer many fulfilling career opportunities in the Faculty of Health Disciplines. Help students advance their education while advancing your career.

Opportunities in nursing and health studies

In addition to our highly qualified team of faculty, administrative, and technical staff, the success of our Master of Health Studies (MHS), Master of Nursing: Generalist (MN-GEN), and Master of Nursing: Nurse Practitioner (MN-NP) programs depends on a pool of contracted sessional instructors who are active in their own practice and research in nursing and health studies.

MHS and MN-GEN course instructors need to be PhD or PhD(c) prepared, with a health background; teaching experience preferred.

MN-NP course instructors need an active NP licence.

You may want to review the list of health studies and nursing courses to see if there is a fit with your interests and expertise.

Please submit a letter of interest and a current CV to Terra Murray, Associate Dean, Teaching and Learning; tmurray@athabascau.ca.

Opportunities in counselling

In addition to our highly qualified team of faculty, administrative, and technical staff, the success of our courses and programs depends on a great team of instructors who are active in their own practice and research in counselling psychology.

We also rely on our practicum supervisors, who mentor students in their field placements.

Course instructors

Adjunct faculty and graduate instructors support our core program faculty. Graduate instructors may be invited to teach core courses in counselling foundations or courses in a wide range of areas of specialization.

We are currently seeking PhD-level registered psychologists to teach courses related to the preparation of professional counsellors and counselling psychologists.

You may want to review the list of counselling courses to see if there is a fit with your interests and expertise.

Please submit a letter of interest and a current CV to Terra Murray, Associate Dean, Teaching and Learning; tmurray@athabascau.ca.

Practicum supervisors

Please consider joining our team as a practicum supervisor in your place of practice. Each Master of Counselling student completes an 8-month practicum placement to graduate.

The practicum offers professional development and supervised practice. It allows students to actively explore issues in working with diverse client populations and areas of practice.

As a practicum supervisor, you will mentor and guide a student through this applied practice experience.

Your responsibilities

Students are required to be on-site for 400 hours and deliver 200 hours of direct client contact. They will be on site an average of 15-16 hours per week and will deliver an average of 7-8 direct client contact hours per week. Please check with the individual student about her or his plans for the practicum.

Learn about required supervision hours.

Your responsibilities as a practicum supervisor include:

  • determining the appropriateness of the student’s background and training for placement at the field site
  • guiding students through site orientation, including familiarization with the placement setting’s rules, regulations, and procedures
  • facilitating progress through the stages of observation, co-facilitation (where appropriate), and independent intervention
  • conducting regular (weekly or bi-weekly) meetings with students to monitor their progress and provide specific feedback on counselling skills development
  • monitoring students’ time and activity logs to ensure they meet the time commitment
  • participating in formative and summative assessment of students’ counselling competence

We encourage you and your organization to apply for approval for practicum supervision. Please contact the practicum coordinator at gcappracticumcoord@athabascau.ca if you have questions about the nature or scope of the practicum.
