Overview

Two positions are open for field research assistants to conduct fieldwork in northern Alberta. The successful candidates will work with Dr. Scott Ketcheson at Athabasca University and conduct fieldwork working within natural wetlands and/or wetlands altered by oil sands activities and linear disturbances (e.g., mineral roads, seismic lines) around Fort McMurray, AB. One of the positions is for a NSERC USRA, so applicants should be undergraduate students currently enrolled in a Canadian University (it does not have to be Athabasca University), preferably in an Environmental Sciences program, and must meet the eligibility requirements of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council Undergraduate Student Research Awards program (NSERC USRA). However, the second position is open to current students as well as recent graduates looking for summer fieldwork experience. Skills and Interests

Ideal candidates will be either enrolled in or a recent graduate of an Environmental Sciences program, with an interest in fundamental sciences, water and the outdoors. Experience conducting fieldwork and relevant coursework in Hydrology are preferable. Applicants must have a strong academic background supported by a cumulative average of at least B- to be eligible for the NSERC USRA position; however, this level of academic achievement is desirable for both positions.

The successful candidates will work as members of the research team and will assist with field-based hydrological research throughout the summer months, with the specific project being determined based upon skillset, fit and the incumbent’s preference.
