Career or engagement opportunities

Work-integrated learning (WIL)

The Faculty of Science and Technology offers work-integrated learning (WIL) opportunities in our undergraduate and graduate programs. WIL has been designed to bring academia and industry together, and students can have this experience online from their own home. Students may complete a work-integrated learning placement and receive credit as part of independent-study courses. Students do need to have at least 60 credits towards the program and a solid base of computing courses.

Students need to take COMP495 at the end of their program and can use work-integrated learning to fulfill the requirement of COMP495. This allows students to gain further work experience in an area that is of interest or can further students in their current career.

Students that are in the Master of Science in Information Systems can have this opportunity as well no matter whether you are in the essay, project, or thesis route. Students can either bring projects from their workplace or select one of the projects available through the Faculty of Science and Technology.

Research clusters and independent research projects

Students may participate as members in one of our research clusters and work with other students and faculty members on projects in key strategic focus areas. Being a member of a cluster gives students access to webinars, collaborative workshops, and research resources. They will also be part of an asynchronous communication channel and help develop research proposals. Students may also complete an independent research project course supervised by a faculty member or an external co-supervisor.

Become a research assistant

Athabasca University researchers often hire graduate students as research assistants. These paid temporary positions let you gain research experience in your field. Opportunities are posted by the AU Research Centre—check regularly to see what is available.
