Dr. Angela Beltaos is an Academic Coordinator of Applied Mathematics at Athabasca University (AU), where she has worked since 2019. Her education is in Mathematics and Physics, having completed her degree programs at University of Alberta and Dalhousie University. In addition, she completed an online program in Renewable Energy and Conservation at Lakeland College. This program inspired her to become an online educator and provided her with the perspective of online students that is key to working with her students at AU today. She is the recipient of numerous academic awards and distinctions throughout her studies, and most recently was nominated for the Distinguished Alumni 2022 recognition at Lakeland College.
Her PhD research focused on the Optoelectronic Properties of Graphene, with combined studies at the University of Alberta (U of A), National Research Council of Canada (NRC) Nanotechnology Research Centre, and the University of Belgrade, under the supervision of Dr. Al Meldrum (U of A) and Dr. Adam Bergren (NRC). Following her doctorate, she continued working in the same group as a post-doctoral researcher. Her current research interests include Nanoscience, Graphene, Optoelectronics, Photonics, Sonification, History of Science, and Mathematics Education. She is excited to involve students in research and work on interdisciplinary collaborations.
Before she joined AU, Dr. Beltaos taught Mathematics and Physics at various institutions including Concordia University of Edmonton, the University of Alberta, and the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT), and she tutored at the Mathematics and Statistics Learning Centre at MacEwan University. In her teaching, she aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills to succeed and the confidence and interest to pursue further studies in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields.
