Computing and information systems student life

Studying computing at Athabasca University

We offer relevant, up-to-date, research-informed, and research-led computing and information systems education, at a time and place convenient for students.

The majority of the students in our programs are working adults who plan their program around work and family commitments. We also welcome visiting students who want to take specific courses, rather than a full program.

Taking courses through the School of Computing and Information Systems gives you a truly global perspective as our students and scholars come from across Canada and countries all over the world.

Course delivery

We deliver courses in 2 formats that allow you to meet your educational goals while continuing to work.

All undergraduate courses and some graduate courses are self-paced. You receive a suggested study schedule and complete the coursework as quickly as you want within a 6-month period. You are able to interact with other students, academic experts, and course coordinators by using the online forums located in the courses.

The rest of our graduate courses are delivered in a paced mode. These courses require you to move through the course content on a fixed schedule. You will interact with your classmates in online conferences, as well as through forums and email.

Learning support

Whether you’ve been a learner with AU for a while or are just starting your educational journey, you might not be aware of all the learner support services available to you.
