Bachelor of Arts, English Major - Why study English language?

Good grammar and the mechanics of language are the building blocks of writing, and writing well is an essential element for success in university, work, and life in general.

English Language Studies (ELS) courses through Athabasca University provide adult students with skills for success in achieving their educational, professional, and personal goals:

• Confidence and ability to pursue further educational studies
• Communication skills necessary to enter and succeed in university or college level programs
• Foundations for success in both employment and social situations

Using individualized instruction, all ELS courses (except ENGL 149) are open to students who speak and write English as their first language as well as to advanced level ELS students. We recommend that all students take the free, online English Language Assessment before registering for any of the ELS courses.
