Bachelor of Arts, Labour Studies Major - What is Labour Studies?

Labour Studies is an interdisciplinary program which draws on history, sociology, political economy, women's studies, industrial relations, and other fields in assessing the place of labour and working people in society.

The Athabasca University Labour Studies program is unique in Canada in that it is the only program of its kind in the country that is available entirely via distance education.

The program is flexible. Only the three core courses are mandatory. You may select the rest of the program from a list of electives according to your background, interests and aspirations. This element of choice enables you to make the program as individual as you are.

Of course students who do not want to enrol in the Labour Studies Program may take one or more courses for their own interest, as part of other programs, or to transfer to another institution.

Our program is designed for students who want to know more about the position of labour and working people in society. It will be of particular interest to trade unionists at the leadership, activist, and general membership levels.
