Dialogical relationships between Rumi’s classical poetry and cultures in Turkey, China, and Central and South Asia.
Overview
Specific activities include, but are not limited to, conducting research and producing a report on dialogical relationships between Rumi’s Classical poetry and the cultures in Turkey, China, and Central and South Asia since the 12th Century B.C.
This project will answer one or more of the following questions:
- Rumi's connection to other cultures in Central Asia, China, and South Asia. Turkey could be the focus of the project.
- Rumi and the Turks/Ottomans and the dialogical relations between Rumi’s work and the Ottoman culture (both then and now).
- How do the Turks understand Rumi? How was Rumi received in Turkey back then and how is he received today? How did the Turkish culture inform Rumi's work and how did his poetry influence the Turks back then and today?
- The dialogical relationship between Rumi's work and any of the above-listed cultures.
- Rumi's use of any of the above listed cultures in a metaphorical way in his Mathnawi stories (or in Divan-i Shams).
The primary job duties for the field research assistant (Research Assistant 3) will include producing a report of 15-25 pages (double spaced; 12 size font; not including bibliography) in response to one or more of the above research questions. The report can be in bullet format, but it will need to be thematically cohesive and coherent. A comprehensive bibliography of the primary and secondary sources used is required. The scope of the research project is limited by 100 hours of work in total. The successful candidate will work with, and directly report to, Dr. Manijeh Mannani at Athabasca University. Dr. Mannani will provide adequate training for the collection and compilation of data and data analysis and interpretation that will be required.
Qualifications
- Comprehensive knowledge of Persian literature
- Superior research and analytical skills
- Superior English writing skills
