Dr. Pamela Walsh has had a varied career in secondary education and college and university post-secondary education. Her Newfoundland and Labrador experience spanned high school science teacher and college instructor, director of continuing education, academic vice president, and president. During her tenure as Assistant Deputy Minister of Education for NL, she was accountable for the college and university systems. Her responsibilities included providing policy advice to the government and working collegially with post-secondary institutions in the province and the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC), an intergovernmental body.

While working in the college system in executive positions, Pamela oversaw several complex projects, including the development of a provincial-wide distance education capacity, the amalgamation of five colleges into a unified provincial college system, and the establishment of a branch campus overseas. The latter earned her a national award from the Canadian Bureau for International Education, recognizing outstanding leadership in the internationalization of Canadian education.

She joined Athabasca University in 2007 as Director of the President’s office. She later accepted the position of Vice-President Advancement, now called Vice-President of University Relations. In this role, she was responsible for building awareness of and support for the university provincially, nationally, and internationally while helping to secure new resources to support the university’s commitment to teaching and research. While VP, she also taught (pro bono) graduate courses at the university.

Currently an associate professor of distance education at Athabasca University, she teaches and supervises graduate students. Her current research interests include open pedagogy and open education practices with graduate students, authentic learning and assessment, transnational distance education, and leadership in higher education.
