Lawrence Purdy is a Canadian lawyer with over 30 years’ experience in legislative drafting at both the federal and subnational levels. He is a practicing lawyer, called to the Ontario bar in 1990 and the Yukon bar in 2009.
From 1990 to 2008, Lawrence served in the Tax Legislation Division of Canada’s federal Department of Finance, where he was responsible for corporate and international income tax legislation. He also represented the Minister of Finance and the Government of Canada in a variety of roles, including as an international tax treaty negotiator.
In 2009, Lawrence joined the Government of Yukon. As legislative counsel he drafted statutes, regulations and other legislative instruments across a full range of topics and provided related legal advice to elected officials and government departments and agencies.
On retiring from the public service in 2016, Lawrence opened a private law practice that offers comprehensive legislative development and drafting services to governments at all levels. He is also engaged in research, teaching and advisory activities aimed at helping small and newer governments build legislative capacity.
