John Raasch graduated from McGill Law School in 1999 and began his career as a litigator at prestigious international law firms in New York City and San Francisco.

In 2011, John transitioned to legislative drafting, joining the Department of Justice in Canada. Over the next twelve years, he played a pivotal role in drafting legislation to incorporate numerous international treaties into Canadian law, as well as drafting legislation in a wide array of fields, including nuclear liability, intellectual property, national defence, military law, immigration, international trade, international aid, transportation, civil procedure, environmental law, and emergency legislation related to COVID-19. Additionally, he provided legislative support to government lawyers and departmental clients, guiding them through the complexities of transforming policy into law.

From 2023 to 2024, John undertook a one-year assignment with the United Nations World Intellectual Property Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. In this position, he drafted legislation for developing countries and taught a course in legislative drafting to other UN lawyers.

Currently, John serves as a legislative drafter with the Government of Yukon.
