As an Assistant Professor of English in the Centre for Humanities and the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies, my research focuses on the history of popular print culture from the eighteenth century to the present, with particular interests in proletarian literatures in Canada and downmarket representations of modernity in transatlantic contexts. My latest article, "In Search of a 'Newer and Truer' Literature: Thomas Phillips Thompson and The Labor Advocate," describes the use of poems, novels, and other popular forms of expression in a labour periodical intended to foster the democratic reform of social organization in late-nineteenth century Canada. My monograph, "Acts of Modernity: The Historical Novel and Effective Communication, 1814-1901," investigates upmarket and downmarket reinvention of the historical novel to effectively communicate the consequences of modernity as problem-solutions of relevance to people on both sides of the Atlantic. I am also an active digital humanities scholar, making use of new technologies to investigate material cultures of print and reading: e.g., Popular Romanticism, Red Flags: The Early Labour Press in Canada, and Popular Print Edmonton. As a teacher, I am responsible for the coordination and tutoring of undergraduate courses in Cultural Studies and English and a world literature course in the Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies.
