Adnan is an Associate Professor of Education Innovation in the Distance Education program at Athabasca University. He has a Ph.D. in Educational Technology from Concordia University in Montreal. Adnan has taught and researched in the Lifelong Learning and Adult Education program at Penn State University, and in the Educational Technology Program at Concordia University. He was also Director of the Distance Education unit at the University of Manitoba, and a researcher and instructional designer of distance education and technology at the University of British Columbia.

Adnan is the co-editor of two books comparing the state of open and distance education in 12 countries: Open and Distance Education in Australia, Europe, and the Americas: National Perspectives in a Digital Age and Open and Distance Education in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East: National Perspectives in a Digital Age. He has been an associate editor of Distance Education (Australia), and the American Journal of Distance Education. Adnan has consulted on education policy, evaluation, and online and distance education design, for international development agencies like the World Bank and Commonwealth of Learning, governments, educational institutions, unions, businesses, and accreditation agencies.
