The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences offers several massive open online courses (MOOCs) designed to help learners, educators and administrators develop skillsets through customized content, collaborative work, and technology-enabled learning. Certification or course-credit options may be available for specific courses.

Blended Learning Practice

Blended Learning Practice (open course) is an introduction to blending technology and distance education teaching strategies with traditional, in-person classroom activities. This free course is open to teachers and other educational professionals considering implementing blended learning practice into their own classrooms or programs.

Learning to Learn Online

Learning to Learn Online (open course, Athabasca University) is recommended to both students and teachers who are looking to understand how learning works in an online space. The course explores the fundamentals of the learning process and various models of online courses to determine your learning preferences and which forms of online learning are best for you. Activities will address common misconceptions, frustrations, and fears about online learning, and introduce techniques to help overcome such obstacles and gain confidence as a learner.

Learning to Learn Online Express

The Learning to Learn Online team at Athabasca University is excited to announce Learning to Learn Online Express, a completely new, 4-week course on the transition to online learning, designed especially for youth. This course is sponsored by AU and offered at no charge. Moving from your familiar classroom to a new world of online learning, youth ages 14 – 21 will have the opportunity to make important steps in what will be a lifelong journey as a learner. This course will help you through the first leg of your journey as an online learner.

Technology-Enabled Learning

Technology-Enabled Learning (open course) is primarily aimed towards teachers who want to build on their knowledge and practice in teaching and learning with technology. Designed to accommodate teachers’ busy schedules, the course offers flexibility with options for learning the content. You will learn from readings, videos, discussions with other participants and instructors, meaningful exercises, quizzes, and short assignments.

Leading Change in Teaching and Learning for a Digital World

The introductory-level Leading Change in Teaching and Learning for a Digital World massive open online course (MOOC) will provide frameworks and practical approaches to the leadership and change management required for implementing technology into teaching and learning. This free, 4-week MOOC provided by the Commonwealth of Learning in partnership with Athabasca University is open to administrators, teachers, and other educational professionals.

Designing for Communities of Inquiry

The Community of Inquiry (CoI) is a pedagogical model that supports digital teaching and learning. The introductory-level Designing for Communities of Inquiry in Online Courses MOOC will explore the why and how of using the CoI as the basis for developing and teaching high-quality online and blended courses. This free, 5-week MOOC provided by the Commonwealth of Learning in partnership with Athabasca University is open to administrators, teachers, and other educational professionals.

Report available on the design, development, and delivery of technology-enabled learning MOOC

A collaboration between the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Athabasca University, Alberta, Canada, and the Commonwealth of Learning based out of British Columbia, Canada, this five-week MOOC is intended to engage teachers who work in any level of education, are from all over the globe, and are interested in technology-enabled learning and open education resources.
