Ceremony details

Did you know?

Graduation and convocation are different. Graduation is the official recognition that you have completed all your program requirements and are entitled to claim the credential you have earned. Convocation is the ceremony where the chair of the Athabasca University Board of Governors confers your degree.

Attending convocation is optional for our grads—so applying to graduate does not automatically register you to attend convocation. To have your name and credential announced during the presentation of degrees, you must register before the deadline of May 31, 2024.

To have your name and credential announced during the degree presentation, you must register for convocation before midnight (Mountain) on May 31, 2024. Late registrations will not be accepted.

For more information on the graduation procedure, including how to apply to graduate, see the University Calendar.

Convocation in absentia

Convocation in absentia means you are graduating without attending the ceremony in person.

You can register to have your name, degree, and an optional photo included in a pre-recorded ceremony and presentation of degrees shared on the convocation website on convocation day to watch at a time convenient for you, your family, and friends. This presentation is not live but includes the same traditional elements of our in-person ceremony.
