Blue Seal Certificate

The Achievement in Business Competencies (Blue Seal) program recognizes Alberta-certified trade and occupational certificate holders who supplement their trade skills with business credentials.

Athabasca University is an approved provider of online courses for the Blue Seal program.

To earn your Blue Seal, you must complete four 3-credit courses from subject areas approved by the provincial government. Many of our business and administrative courses will fulfil these requirements, however, we strongly encourage you to check with Alberta Advanced Education before you register to make sure your choice is accepted.

Why get a Blue Seal?

The knowledge you gain in your Blue Seal courses will give you the tools to succeed in business and management, as well as in your trade.

Blue Seal accreditation is a valuable asset to trades employers looking to fill supervisory and management positions. Some course combinations can also be a stepping-stone to starting your own business.

And when you take your Blue Seal courses through AU, you can apply them toward one of our undergraduate certificates or degrees.

Why study with AU?

AU offers fully accredited online university courses so you can fit your education into your busy life. Registration for Blue Seal courses (and all other undergraduate courses) is offered year-round, and courses start every month. Register for a course by the 10th of any month, and you can start as early as the first day of the next. Plus, our Student Support Centre staff are there to help you every step of the way.

Eligibility

To receive a Blue Seal, you must have one of:

  • a valid Alberta Journeyman Certificate
  • an Alberta Occupational Certificate
  • a document indicating that you hold a certificate that is recognized as equivalent to an Alberta trade or occupational certificate

To study at AU, you must be over the age of 16. There are no other educational requirements (some courses may have prerequisites).

Obtaining your certificate

Once you have completed your courses, you need to apply for your certificate through Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training.
