Why was online learning at Athabasca University the right fit for you?
The self-paced online learning is perfect for a mature student. Furthermore, I also teach online. So, I understand the personal qualities needed to succeed in this environment: realism and self-motivation.
How has studying at AU helped you achieve your goals (personal, professional, academic)?
I'm on my fifth course and I have noticed—and my spouse and friends have noticed—that I'm much more measured in how I respond to the world. My goal of "not dying stupid" seems within reach!
What obstacles have you had to overcome to pursue your education? How did you overcome them?
It took awhile to settle into the routine of blocking out time to study. I accept that this education is being pursued for enrichment, therefore, I can treat myself gently as a I navigate the shoals of distractions that daily life sends my way.
How do you balance your studies with other responsibilities like work or family?
In August, I block off my calendar with all my responsibilites for the coming year: marriage, students, studying at AU, and social commitments. Then, each summer I reflect on the year ahead and readjust as needed.
Who is your biggest cheerleader that helps you stay focused on your goals?
My wife, a retired professor and associate dean is a big booster. But I'm strongly self-motivated too. The experience 20 years ago of completing a post-secondary diploma in music pedagogy, and in my youth completing a university music degree helped.
What's your favourite course?
PHIL 240: Ancient Philosophy: The Rise of Reason in a Mythic World.
How is your AU education different than what you've experienced previously? (a.k.a. - How is AU like no other?)
It's completely online. It is self-paced. It's Canadian. The quality of the courses exceeds my previous studies in the late 1970s and mid 2000s.
