Being able to do online learning with Athabasca University has allowed me to still pursue my dreams while being mindful of my physical abilities; I'm currently struggling with a possible autoimmune disease. Additionally, I am still a high school student—graduating in May—and AU has allowed me to pursue higher education to get ahead of my studies.
How has studying at AU helped you achieve your goals (personal, professional, academic)?Because of past struggles with my mental health, I have a dream to become a counsellor for young adults. AU's programs, school style, and accessibility all allow me to get the education I need to make my dream a reality. I don't think I would be able to get the education experience I need at any other university, at least not in a way that is sustainable for me.
I have a very unique learning style where nine times out of 10 I teach myself better than anyone else can. Additionally, I physically and mentally cannot handle sitting in lectures all day or navigating a campus. AU eliminates all of those barriers.
As someone with autism, anxiety, depression, and a possible auto-immune disease, I have a lot of things that can get in the way of my education. I switched to online school in Grade 8 and have never gone back. Since then, I have learned a lot about myself and my learning needs. By allowing myself the accommodations I need, staying disciplined and motivated, I was able to fast track high school, and start university at 16.
How do you balance your studies with other responsibilities like work or family?I have a part-time job and schedule my school time around that. I've always been a fast worker, so I often have quite a few hours in a day, or even sometimes full days, where I have time for friends—if time isn't filled by doctor's appointments, which it often is.
Who is your biggest cheerleader that helps you stay focused on your goals?Myself! I'm so proud of all I've been able to overcome and accomplish, and I use that as motivation to continue pursuing my dreams (even when they change).
What's your favourite course?PSYC 289 was my first ever course and was one that I found very fascinating and enjoyable!
What are your plans for the future, after completing your AU program?Once I have completed my bachelor’s degree, I want to pursue a Master of Counselling. After school, I want to become a counselling therapist for young adults specializing in autism and depression.
How is your AU education different than what you've experienced previously? (a.k.a. - How is AU like no other?)AU allows me to take control of my learning and decide what, when, where, and how I learn!
