I am a Professor in the Faculty of Health Disciplines at Athabasca University and a former dean of FHD. I live and work as an uninvited but welcomed guest on the traditional territories of the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta, which includes the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprising the Siksika, Piikani, and Kainai First Nations), as well as the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Wesley First Nations) and also the home to Métis Nation of Alberta, Region III.

I am a Registered Nurse and an inaugural member of the Board of the Alberta Association of Nurses. I have had extensive long-term committee involvement with CARNA including leading the review of Nursing Practice Standards and developing Entry-to-Practice Competencies and serving for 10 years as the CARNA representative for Netcare developing the provincial electronic health record.

My research interests focus around exemplary online education, arts-based teaching strategies, healthcare informatics and compassion fatigue in healthcare professionals and older adult caregivers. I’ve authored and co-authored several books concerning nursing and healthcare informatics as well as numerous articles related to my research interests.

I am a strong advocate of exemplary online teaching and learning and so enjoy supporting our students on their learning journeys.
