Nature Photography by Robert Holmberg

I make photographs because I like to document nature. I hope that my photographs will help remind people how interesting and enjoyable is our natural world. In turn, interest and enjoyment may lead to increased value and better protection of nature.

Amazon Rain Forest in the Rain
Location: Tiputini River, Ecuador (2006)
This photograph was made from a boat. This tree dominated a bend in the river. The low dawn light and fog contributes to the silhouette.”

Autumn along the Assiniboine River
Location: Sturgis, Saskatchewan (2009)
“Near the headwaters of the Assiniboine River. At this location and time, it was a quiet stream on a beautiful fall day.”

Autumn Leaves at Baptiste Lake
Location: Baptiste Lake, Alberta (2008)
“In northern Alberta, most leaves turn yellow in the autumn. However these were predominately orange-red. I liked how the individual leaves make the photograph resemble a pointillist painting.”

Boreal Coniferous Forest
Location: Kakwa Wildland Park, Alberta (2006)
“While helping do a biological survey of the park, we were flown by helicopter to various sites otherwise unreachable. The photograph was made near our camp at Dead Horse Meadows – an equestrian recreational area.”

Foxtail in the Wind
Location: Roadside ditch, Alberta (ca. 1995)
“The shutter speed of the camera was slowed to catch the movement of the plants.”

Hoarfrost on the Roof
Location: Preeceville, Saskatchewan (2008)
“This photograph was made with a telephoto lens when hoarfrost covered the area. Although this looks like a black and white copy, it is really coloured – but you have to look closely.”

Leafy Seadragon - portrait
Location: Living Seas Aquarium, Orlando, Florida (2005)
“These pipe fish were constantly moving and the light was low, but after many failed attempts, one fish finally hovered under a lamp for a few seconds.”

Robert; Red Sunrise and Branches
Location: Baptiste Lake, Alberta (2009)
“I never get up early enough in the summer to see this colour.”

Sedges and Tree Reflections
Location: Muskeg Creek, Athabasca (2007)
“On first glance this scene may appear upside down.”

Surf's Up Colorado
Location: Rocky Mountains, Colorado (2005)
“At first glance, this may appear to be an ocean wave but if you look closely, you can see details of the mountain.”

Tenacious Juniper
Location: Kings Canyon, Kananaskis, Alberta (2008)
“I marveled at how the shrubs were able to cling to the cliff. With so little water and nutrients, they must be many years old.”

Wooden Bench and Yellow Maple Leaves
Location: Naheeno Park, Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, British Columbia (1973)
“This photograph took three years to make. I was using 35 mm slide film and even though I bracketed the exposure, the bright background was either to light or the dark foreground was too dark. By the time I got the film developed, the leaves were gone. On the third year, I finally got it right. With a digital camera, it would have been far easier.”
