Call for Nominations
Vacancies –Board of Governors of Athabasca University, Board Standing Committee and General Faculties Council (GFC) Standing Committee
We are seeking nominations to populate the following upcoming vacancies on the Board of Governors of Athabasca University, the Board Honorary Awards Committee and GFC Academic Planning, Policy, and Standards Committee:
Board of Governors of Athabasca University
- One (1) full-time academic faculty member nominated by GFC (for a term not exceeding three (3) years as set out in the ministerial appointment)
Board Honorary Awards Committee
- Two (2) full-time academic faculty members (term January 1, 2025- December 31, 2027)
GFC Academic Planning, Policy, and Standards Committee
- One (1) full-time academic faculty member from the Faculty of Health Disciplines (term ending June 30, 2025)

Points to Consider
Nominees for the full-time academic faculty member positions must meet the criteria set out in section 3.1.1 of the GFC Rules, which states:
“Academic staff means academic staff who are appointed under the Faculty Association agreement to a full-time faculty position in which the person has been or may be granted tenure, and includes Professors, Associate Professors, Assistant Professors, and Academic Coordinators.”
In accordance with section 4.3 of the GFC Rules, members of the academic staff on any combination of leave for over three (3) continuous months are ineligible to serve as members of GFC and GFC Standing Committees.
Section 54 of the Post-secondary Learning Act defines those persons who are not eligible to be a member of the Board of Governors of Athabasca University. Section 54 states:
“54. A person who is an employee of the board of a public post-secondary institution may not be appointed as or remain a member of the board if the person
- is a voting member of the executive body or an officer of an academic or non-academic staff association of that public post-secondary institution, or
- has the responsibility, or the joint responsibility with others, of negotiating with the board, on behalf of the academic or non-academic staff association of that public post-secondary institution, the terms and conditions of service of members of the association.”

If required, elections will be conducted, through a confidential voting software (Simply Voting), only if more than one nomination is received for a position. If only one nomination is received for a position, that nominee will be considered elected by acclamation.
