Spanish (SPAN) 301

Overview

SPAN 301 consists of four integrated components: grammar, vocabulary, culture, and literature. The course reviews and further develops basic language skills acquired in First Year Spanish. The emphasis is on learning grammar structures and on vocabulary acquisition. The objective of SPAN 301 is to strengthen both written and oral skills that will enable students to communicate in a variety of contexts. The lessons in the main textbook En contacto: Gramática en acción are integrated with the laboratory component of the course. The literary component from En contacto: Lecturas intermedias consists of excerpts and short stories that are read mainly for aesthetic pleasure, comprehension, and vocabulary acquisition. Students are also expected to do simple literary analysis exercises.

Students acquire written and oral practice in each unit of SPAN 301 by doing many written and oral learning activities.

Unit 1: Gramática en acción Capítulo VII

• Gramática: Afirmativos y negativos, El uso de ‘gustar’, ‘faltar’ y verbos similares, Uso del subjuntivo en descripciones de lo desconocido, indefinido y en ciertas conjunciones adverbiales.
• Video cultura: El baile flamenco
• En contacto: Lecturas intermedias - Capítulo VII

Unit 2: En contacto: Gramática en acción Capítulo VIII

• Gramática: Revisar los usos básicos de los verbos reflexivos y aprender los verbos reflexivos que cambian de significado, El uso de los verbos reflexivos con el imperativo. El “se” impersonal y el “se” pasivo.
• Video cultural: El chocolate en la cocina mexicana
• En contacto: Lecturas intermedias - Capítulo VIII

Unit 3: En contacto: Gramática en acción Capítulo IX

• Gramática: El imperfecto del subjuntivo, Los adverbios y sus usos, El uso correcto del infinitivo.

Unit 4: En contacto: Gramática en acción Capítulo X

• Gramática: El participio pasado y su uso como adjetivo - Los tiempos compuestos.

Unit 5: En contacto: Gramática en acción Capítulo XI

• Gramática: El uso de tiempos verbales en frases complejas, Usos de las clausulas con “si”.

Unit 6: En contacto: Gramática en acción Capítulo XII

• Gramática: El uso del participio presente y las formas progresivas, Usos de pronombres neutros

Evaluation

To receive credit for SPAN 301, you must achieve a course composite grade of at least D (50 percent) and a grade of at least 50 percent on the written examination. The weighting of the composite grade is as follows:

Evaluation

To  receive credit for the SPAN 301 challenge registration, you must achieve a grade of at least  D (50 percent) on the final written examination.
