Overview
Health professionals possess a wealth of information and experience. In this course, students will learn to use a variety of dissemination strategies designed to share knowledge and experience. Students will write an article designed for scholarly publication, develop a poster presentation, and complete a lay audience presentation.
Outline
MHST/NURS 611 comprises the following seven units:
- Unit 1: Orientation and Introduction
- Unit 2: Identifying Potential Target Journals
- Unit 3: Developing an Article Outline
- Unit 4: Writing the Article
- Unit 5: Poster Presentation
- Unit 6: Writing for a Lay Audience
- Unit 7: Wrap-up and Evaluation
Objectives
To assist the student to be able to:
- Identify the requirements of refereed scholarly publication;
- Write an article suitable for a refereed scholarly publication;
- Develop a poster slide presentation;
- Write an article appropriate to a lay audience;
- Identify additional dissemination opportunities; and
- Develop skills as a reviewer.
Evaluation
The assessment structure for NURS/MHST 611 is based on the following course activities. All activities in the course are graded on a pass / fail basis. You must pass all course activities to be awarded an overall passing grade.

There is no print textbook for this course. All learning resources are available online. Scholarly articles and chapters from e-texts are available from the Athabasca University (AU) online library. Other online resources including videos and other multi-media resources are included in the course and available without cost. Most of the learning resources used in the course are Open Educational Resources (OER).
