Learning outcomes
MAIS 610 has five major learning outcomes. After completing this course, students should be able to:
- List the principal definitions of work and the value of work.
- Describe their experience in the working world (waged or unwaged), and relate that experience to the principal definitions of work and the value of work.
- Identify the principal theoretical approaches to work and society, and assess the relationship of those theories to the challenges of the contemporary social context, including an appreciation of unacknowledged work.
- Analyze the context of the changing dynamics of work in contemporary society, assemble evidence to outline the challenges created by these dynamics, and formulate responses and policies to address these challenges.
- Identify the different contexts of work in the Global South compared to work in the Global North, and assess how that impacts agency at work.
Outline
MAIS 610 consists of 9 units that will be addressed over 14 weeks:
Unit 1: What Is Work?
Unit 2: The Value of Work
Unit 3: Manual Labour, Mental Labour
Unit 4: Social Reproduction
Unit 5: The Global Workforce
Unit 6: Precarious Labour
Unit 7: Migrant Labour
Unit 8: Coerced Labour
Unit 9: Work, Organization, and Agency
Evaluation
To receive credit for MAIS 610, students must complete and submit all of the assignments, and achieve a minimum grade of C− (60 percent) for the course.
Students will be evaluated on their understanding of the concepts presented in the course and on their ability to apply those concepts. The final grade in the course will be based on the marks achieved for the following activities.
