About Bachelor of Professional Arts Major in Communication Studies
At Athabasca University, we recognize that you're not starting from scratch. You bring a wealth of previous knowledge to the table. Our Bachelor of Professional Arts, Communication Studies Major is specifically designed to elevate what you already know. This degree builds on your prior education, whether that is diploma-to-degree in a related field or transferring credits from a previous degree. We blend it seamlessly with a rich tapestry of theories, research, and emerging trends in the communications field.
You will be considered a pre-program student until your admission requirements are confirmed. You can still take courses during this time.
In addition, applicants must also complete AU's English Language Assessment (ELA) prior to being enrolled in the program.

Overview
In the program, you will apply your professional knowledge within the national and international context of mass media and communication. You will explore topics including:
the history of mass communications media
the effects of media and technology on individuals and society
emerging trends and issues in communications
When you graduate, you will have a sound knowledge of the many contexts you practice your profession in:

You will also be prepared to take on leadership positions, administrative responsibilities, and coordinating and consulting functions in your field.

Completion times
Finish this program in as little as 2 years of full-time study or work at your own pace and take as long as you need. There is no time limit for completion. The program may be completed faster if transfer credit is applied toward your degree.
How to apply
You can apply to AU online, anytime. Once you’ve completed the online application form and paid the one-time general application fee (and transfer credit evaluation fee, if applicable), you’re officially an AU student and can start registering in courses.
If you have previous post-secondary education or significant life and work experience that relates to this program, you may be eligible for transfer credit or Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR). This could mean fewer courses to get your AU degree.
If you transfer credit, you must complete a minimum of 30 credits at AU.
Once you have paid the initial application fee, tuition is pay-as-you-go for each course registration. Course fees vary depending on your location and other factors.

In Athabasca University's Bachelor of Professional Arts, Communication Studies Major, you'll embark on a comprehensive curriculum that balances core essentials and elective freedom. You'll dive into required major courses such as Communication Theory and Analysis, Communication in History, and Cultural Policy in Canada, along with a rich selection of electives that allow you to tailor your education to your interests—from Theories of Social Change to Issues in Access to Information and Privacy Protection.
To complete the program you will need to fulfill all the general requirements of the Bachelor of Professional Arts, plus those specific to your major.

Based upon the applicant’s ELA results, a recommendation will be made as to which writing skills’ course is appropriate. Those applicants whose ELA suggests they would benefit from skill building courses at the 100-level will be allowed to register in ENGL 155: Developing Writing Skills; ENGL 177: English for Academic Purposes; or PHIL 152: Basics in Critical Thinking, Reading and Writing. The 100-level skill building course can be counted as a Junior Option in the Major.
