Two well-respected Athabasca University (AU) academics-and Black women-joined Real Talk with Ryan Jespersen for a special Black History Month panel.
Dr. Veronica Fynn Bruey and Dr. Chika C. Daniels shared their perspectives on Black history and culture, their experiences with racism as immigrants to Canada, and issues such as equity, diversity, and inclusion, during the 45-minute conversation on the popular Alberta podcast.
They also reflected on the importance of learning about Black history and cultures year-round.
Fynn Bruey holds six degrees from four continents and has more than 25 years of research experience in 30 countries. She identifies as an Indigenous Liberian war survivor and a migrant to Canada.
Daniels, who teaches at AU and the University of Calgary and has two decades of experience in the architecture, business and finance, and community development sectors, said there's quite a bit of fanfare about Black history during Black History Month. Unfortunately, that attention goes away after February, she said.
