After a 6-year break, Victoria Lang chooses Athabasca University to achieve career goals
I chose Athabasca University (AU) to upgrade my previous bachelor’s degree in psychology in order to apply to AU’s Master of Counselling program. My experience as a non-program student has been nothing but exceptional.
I thought enrolling at an online university would be challenging as my previous experience was at an in-person university, but the professors are even more reliable. The support that I have received from my professors has enriched my learning experience and increased my confidence with online learning. As an individual who struggles with test anxiety, the resources from Accessibility Services have helped accommodate my needs.
I had been out of school for 6 years and thought repeatedly that it was too late to pursue my goal of becoming a marriage and family therapist. I thought returning to a university may be challenging, but this was definitely not the case.
Flexibility for life and learning
AU’s courses are very flexible and as a non-program student, taking prerequisites at AU has pushed me closer to obtaining my career goal. I love that with AU I can learn at any time of the day; with my busy schedule, studying sometimes begins in the evening.
I am also able to do things I love, such as volunteering and visiting my family abroad, without sacrificing my education. I can take my schoolwork with me and know that if I have any questions about a course my professor are reachable at any time. AU programs make it achievable to obtain a great education without sacrificing any personal commitments or family time.
Pursuing career dreams
I used to look at everyone around me and see how miserable they were in their current occupations. I personally felt unfulfilled in my past career and knew that the jump from a working environment to online education wouldn’t be easy.
Thankfully, I found AU, where the supportive staff and flexible schooling made the beginning of my journey easier. When I enrolled in a remote university, I thought I would feel alone in my education but through AU’s app I have met many people in the same boat as me.
There are many ways to feel connected with other students at AU and there is always something going on! I have never regretted starting my journey late and would not be where I am without my success as a student at AU.
