AU to withdraw from Middle States Commission on Higher Education
Changes have no impact for AU students
After extensive reflection and consultation, Athabasca University has voluntarily withdrawn its accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
AU had been accredited by the Middle States since 2005. AU was among a small group of internationally accredited institutions and the only Canadian university with this accreditation.
As a public post-secondary institution in Canada, AU’s degree-granting authority is established by the Government of Alberta’s Ministry of Advanced Education through legislation. AU’s participation in the Middle States was entirely voluntary.
Withdrawing from the Middle States will have no impact on AU students. AU is still fully accredited by Alberta Advanced Education.
The change is expected to take effect March 31, 2025.
