Muyibat Omotunde: Grad’s immigrant experience includes two nursing degrees from AU

I was born in Lagos, Nigeria, and immigrated to the United Kingdom in 2005. In 2012, I immigrated to Calgary with my family. My first job in Canada was caring for older adults and seniors as a health–care aide. At the same time, I enrolled in a nursing diploma program at Bow Valley College in Calgary.
I was happy to learn about medication administration, health promotion, managing chronic health conditions, and how to work in multidisciplinary teams providing person-centred care. I was grateful to learn and saw it as an opportunity to apply knowledge while caring for older adults. This experience influenced my decision to further my education and positively impact lives through health care. However, as a wife and a working mom, I needed to enrol in a university that facilitates work-life balance.
I visited the AU website and saw that the theory components of the Bachelor of Nursing program were online. I was excited because this meant I could enrol in a bachelor’s degree program and still be present for my family. I applied immediately.
When I was taking the nursing program, I worked as a licensed practical nurse caring for older adults. I was able to apply knowledge gained from my nursing diploma program and the bachelor program. AU enhanced my critical thinking and leadership skills.
“Despite being a wife and working mother, I was able to complete both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing. With AU, I learned a lot from the amazing professors and acquired the education necessary to work as a registered nurse and as part of a multidisciplinary team caring for older adults in a long-term care facility.”

Despite being a wife and working mother, I was able to complete both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing. With AU, I learned a lot from the amazing professors and acquired the education necessary to work as a registered nurse and as part of a multidisciplinary team caring for older adults in a long-term care facility. I was also able to become an educator and teach at a college. My education and experience at AU also facilitated my admission into a PhD medicine program at the University of Alberta. I am profoundly grateful for this!
